Rawalpindi Pirwadhai Bus Stand Set for Major Upgrade, Plans Underway to Increase Revenue from 280-Kanal Site

RAWALPINDI: The district administration has prepared plans to upgrade Pirwadhai General Bus Stand into a modern transport facility, aiming to improve services for passengers while increasing government revenue from the major transport terminal.

The issue was discussed during a meeting between Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir and a delegation of traders led by Rawalpindi Anjuman-e-Tajiran President Abdul Ghafoor Parcha. The meeting reviewed traffic and parking issues in the city, as well as matters relating to Pirwadhai Bus Stand, Raja Model Bazaar, Raja Bazaar Parking Plaza, loading vehicle timings and drainage. According to the deputy commissioner, Pirwadhai Bus Stand covers approximately 280 kanals of land. Despite the size and commercial potential of the site, its existing revenue is considered low, prompting the administration to examine options for improving its utilisation, management and revenue generation.

Under the proposed plan, the bus stand could be transformed into a modern transport facility with improved passenger waiting areas, commercial services and other essential amenities. The proposal also envisages developing the terminal as a modern, multi-purpose transit centre.

Pirwadhai Bus Stand is one of the major transport terminals in Rawalpindi and serves routes connecting the city with various parts of the country. The terminal has, however, faced persistent problems including damaged roads, inadequate sewerage, waste accumulation and encroachments.

The administration is also reviewing the management structure of the terminal. The move comes amid complaints regarding the collection of allegedly unauthorised daily charges from transporters and other administrative issues at the bus stand.

The proposed upgrade is aimed at improving the overall management of Pirwadhai Bus Stand, providing better facilities to passengers and transporters, and making more effective use of its 280-kanal site.

If implemented, the project could transform Pirwadhai from a congested and ageing bus terminal into a more organised transport and commercial hub while also increasing revenue for the local government.
