CALIFORNIA (special crosspondent) – Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has officially introduced a series of major new features aimed at enhancing the efficiency and convenience of its calling services. The most significant update is the integration of audio and video calling directly into the WhatsApp Web interface.

According to the official announcement, users can now initiate and receive both one-to-one and group calls directly from their web browsers, eliminating the requirement for a standalone desktop application. These calls remain end-to-end encrypted and are provided free of charge, with no restrictions on call duration, supporting digital infrastructure scalability for users worldwide.

New Features and Call Management Tools

Among the notable additions is the new ‘Call Transfer’ feature. This functionality enables users to seamlessly transition an ongoing group call from one device to another—for instance, shifting from a smartphone to a laptop or WhatsApp Web—without the need to disconnect the session.

To bolster security and meeting management, the platform has launched a ‘Waiting Room’ feature. This tool allows the host of a group call to review and authorize participants before they are granted access to the conversation, ensuring a controlled environment for digital communication similar to other digital training and collaborative platforms.

Enhanced Audio and Video Quality

WhatsApp has also unveiled ‘Background Noise Suppression’, which is specifically engineered to filter out ambient sound, providing clearer audio fidelity even in high-noise environments. Furthermore, the introduction of ‘QuickHD’ ensures that video calls maintain high-definition quality from the moment the connection is established.

The suite of updates is rounded out by several user-interface enhancements, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, and detailed call history and ‘favourite calls’ management. These improvements reflect Meta’s ongoing commitment to evolving its service to compete with global connectivity standards.

Meta confirmed that these features commenced their global rollout on 28 July 2026 and will continue to be deployed to users in various regions across the coming weeks.
