ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Pakistan’s telecommunications sector is set for another major transformation as Ufone and Telenor Pakistan have formally initiated the rebranding process for their merged operations by submitting an application to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Merger Phase and New Identity

The move marks the next phase of the landmark merger between Pakistan Telecommunication Mobile Limited (PTML), which operates Ufone, and Telenor Pakistan. The combined entity is expected to introduce a new corporate identity once all regulatory approvals are completed.

According to reports, PTML and its parent company, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), have requested PTA’s approval to launch a new brand name that will replace the existing Ufone and Telenor identities following the completion of the merger.

Regulatory Hurdles for Rebranding

However, PTA has informed the company that the rebranding process cannot proceed until the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) formally notifies the legal completion of the merger and approves the post-merger corporate structure, including the composition of the company’s Board of Directors.

Officials familiar with the matter said the regulator requires all statutory and legal formalities to be completed before authorizing the launch of a new telecom brand. The approval process is intended to ensure that the merged entity fully complies with Pakistan’s corporate and telecommunications regulations.

Legal Completion of Merger

The development follows the legal merger of Telenor Pakistan into PTML, under which Telenor ceased to exist as a separate corporate entity. All of its assets, subscribers, spectrum rights, infrastructure, employees, and operational responsibilities have been transferred to PTML.

Industry analysts believe the merger will significantly reshape Pakistan’s mobile telecommunications market by creating one of the country’s largest telecom operators. The combined customer base is expected to strengthen the company’s competitive position against other major mobile operators while improving operational efficiency, network expansion, and digital service offerings.
