The feature enables users to verify their identity using a short selfie video, providing an additional recovery option if they are locked out of their Google account or lose access to their trusted device.

According to Google, the new sign-in method is intended for situations where users can no longer access their primary phone or computer, offering a flexible alternative to traditional account recovery methods. The recordings are created only with the user’s consent, stored securely in encrypted form, and can be deleted at any time through Google Account settings. The company said the videos are used exclusively for account verification unless users explicitly agree to additional uses. Even while stored, the videos remain encrypted to ensure they cannot be accessed by unauthorised parties.

Protection Against Deepfakes

To prevent identity fraud, Google has integrated multiple layers of security into the new system. The platform checks that the selfie video is recorded in real time by asking users to perform simple facial and head movements, making it difficult to use manipulated videos or AI-generated deepfakes.
