Pakistan U-19 Cricket Team Mistaken for Illegal Migrants as Protesters Surround Hotel in England

PORTSMOUTH, Sept 9: An unusual situation unfolded in the English city of Portsmouth when Pakistan’s Under-19 cricket team, touring England, was mistakenly identified as a group of illegal migrants, prompting around 40 to 50 anti-immigration protesters to gather outside the hotel where the young cricketers were staying.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening outside the Marriott Hotel in Portsmouth, where the Pakistan U-19 squad was staying during its England tour. The protesters had reportedly been led to believe through social media posts and rumours that a new group of migrants had been brought to the hotel by coach.

The presence of a coach carrying a group of young Asian men reportedly fuelled the rumours, particularly because the same coach company had also been used to transport asylum seekers in the area. As the rumours spread online, a group of protesters, some wearing masks or face coverings, gathered outside the hotel.

The misunderstanding was eventually cleared up after George Madgwick, the Reform UK leader on Hampshire County Council and councillor for the ward where the hotel is located, arrived at the scene. He spoke to the hotel management and was informed that the people staying at the hotel were members of Pakistan’s Under-19 cricket team.

Madgwick also spoke to the team’s coach and was shown evidence confirming the identity of the visitors. He then went outside and told the protesters that they had got the wrong people and that those staying at the hotel were cricketers rather than asylum seekers.

The protesters accepted the explanation and dispersed within minutes. Reports said there was no direct confrontation or interaction between the protesters and the Pakistani players.

Hampshire Police said officers were called to the hotel shortly before 6:30pm after a group of people had gathered outside. Police spoke to those present and explained the situation. No offence was identified in connection with the incident, and the group later left the area.

The bizarre incident came only days after Portsmouth had witnessed large anti-immigration demonstrations following the arrival of asylum seekers by boat. Hundreds of protesters had gathered in the city, with some wearing masks and clashes reported between demonstrators and police. The heightened tensions over immigration appear to have contributed to the rapid spread of the false information about the Pakistani cricketers.

Following the incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board contacted the Pakistan Cricket Board to check on the welfare of the young players and said it would review security arrangements for the remainder of the team’s tour.

Pakistan’s Under-19 team is currently touring England and has recently faced England Under-19s in a four-day Test, losing the match by 10 runs. The young Pakistanis are scheduled to play further matches at Arundel and Guildford during the tour.
