WASHINGTON, Sept. 10: US President Donald Trump has said the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed “Trump Strait,” while claiming that the United States is winning the ongoing war with Iran and that oil prices will decline once the conflict comes to an end.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump made the remarks on Wednesday, Sept. 9, while addressing the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. The US president claimed that Washington was controlling commercial activity in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways for global energy supplies.

“We control the trade in the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said, adding that he believed the waterway should be called “Trump Strait” and that an announcement regarding the proposed name would be made soon.

Trump also made a sarcastic reference to Iran’s leadership, saying he expected Iranian leaders to be pleased with the proposed name. His remarks added a political and provocative dimension to the already intense confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

The US president further claimed that America was winning the war with Iran. He linked the conflict to global oil markets, saying that oil prices would come down after the United States won the war.

Trump has repeatedly focused on the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz during the escalating conflict with Iran. Trump’s latest comments came amid continuing military and political tensions between the United States and Iran.
