Punjab Local Government Elections: Phase-wise Polling Proposed from December 15 to January 15
ISLAMABAD: Significant progress has been made towards holding local government elections in Punjab, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) agreeing in principle to the provincial government’s proposal to conduct the elections in phases between December 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027.
A meeting on the local government elections in Punjab was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Election Commissioner, where the provincial government’s proposals regarding the conduct of the elections were reviewed.
The Punjab government proposed holding the local government elections in phases during the period from December 15, 2026 to January 15, 2027. The ECP agreed in principle to the proposed timeframe.
The provincial government said that holding the elections in phases would help ensure better management of security and administrative arrangements. The Chief Secretary Punjab maintained that the period from December to January was suitable in view of school examinations, fog and the time required to ensure adequate availability of resources for the elections.
The Punjab government will soon submit a detailed plan for conducting the elections in phases to the ECP, while the commission has also sought a comprehensive plan outlining the election phases from the provincial government.
According to the ECP, the delimitation process for local government elections in Punjab has already been completed. Consultations between the provincial government and the Election Commission are continuing to move the electoral process forward.
The ECP clarified that consultation with the provincial government before announcing the date of local government elections is a constitutional and legal requirement.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that holding local government elections is a constitutional requirement under Article 140-A of the Constitution and the Election Commission would fulfill its constitutional role in conducting the elections.
