Imran Khan Shifted from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21: Founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been shifted from Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad under tight security, following an order of the Supreme Court.

Imran Khan was brought to Shifa International Hospital during the night between Thursday and Friday, where arrangements have been made for his medical examination and treatment. A large contingent of police and Rangers personnel was deployed during his transfer.

On August 18, a three-member Supreme Court bench had ordered that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours for medical examination and treatment. The court also directed that a medical board comprising specialists be constituted and that his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, be included in the medical examination and treatment process.

Following the court’s decision, the government filed a review petition. However, the Supreme Court Registrar’s Office returned the petition with objections. The government had also sought clarification regarding the legal scope of the court’s order while proceeding with its implementation.

Special security arrangements were made at Shifa International Hospital ahead of Imran Khan’s transfer. Senior Islamabad Police officials visited the hospital to review the arrangements, while police and Rangers personnel were deployed around the facility.

Meanwhile, the government told the Senate that if medical experts consider treatment abroad necessary for Imran Khan, the option could also be considered after completing the required legal procedure.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since August 2023. During his imprisonment, his family and PTI have repeatedly expressed concern over his health, particularly his eyesight, while the government has maintained that he has been provided with necessary medical facilities in jail.

Under the Supreme Court’s order, reports regarding Imran Khan’s medical examination and treatment will be submitted to the court.
