CDA Approves Modern Solid Waste Management System for 65 Rural Union Councils

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved a comprehensive solid waste management plan for rural areas of Zones IV and V of Islamabad, under which 65 union councils will be brought into an integrated and effective waste management and cleanliness network.

Under the vision of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the leadership of CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf, the CDA has approved the introduction of a modern, technology-based system for waste collection, transportation and disposal in Zones IV and V. The CDA Board has also approved a comprehensive solid waste disposal plan for rural Islamabad.

Under the plan, approximately 342 tonnes of waste will be managed daily in Zones IV and V, while 1,610 personnel will be deployed for solid waste management operations. As many as 103 different types of machinery will be used for waste collection and disposal.

A regular waste collection system will be introduced in Bani Gala, Ghori Town, Lehtrar and other rural areas. A modern door-to-door waste collection system will also be introduced in rural Islamabad to reduce the difficulties faced by residents.

Route optimisation and GPS tracking will be used for the transportation and disposal of waste. The entire solid waste management system will be monitored through a central command and control centre.

Under the plan, daily reports on cleanliness performance will be prepared at the union council level. A digital attendance and field deployment system will also be introduced for sanitation staff. In addition to facial monitoring, the system will also be effectively monitored through the Safe City system.

The CDA will take all possible measures to ensure timely resolution of citizens’ complaints and improve the efficiency of the cleanliness system.

Mini tippers and handcarts will be deployed in rural areas, particularly on longer routes and narrow roads, to ensure effective waste collection in areas where larger vehicles face access difficulties.

The CDA said the modern cleanliness system is being introduced with the assistance of a renowned Turkish waste management company. The initiative aims to establish an integrated solid waste management system in rural Islamabad and address the existing gaps in waste collection and disposal services.

CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf said that no area of Islamabad would be neglected in terms of cleanliness and that the provision of better sanitation facilities to residents would be ensured.

CDA Member Environment Abdullah Khurram Niazi will supervise the implementation of the project.
