ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar held a high-level meeting on Thursday with the British High Commissioner, Jane Marriott, to discuss bilateral relations and pressing issues affecting Pakistani students. The dialogue focused on the importance of sustaining strong institutional cooperation and fostering educational ties between the United Kingdom and Pakistan, a nation where leaders often emphasize the goal for Pakistan to emerge as a strong, prosperous and dignified country on the global stage.

Visa Processing Concerns

During the deliberations, Minister Tarar formally conveyed the government’s significant concern regarding the persistent delays in the issuance of UK visas to Pakistani applicants. The minister underscored that hundreds of students are currently facing substantial difficulties due to these administrative bottlenecks. He warned that such prolonged processing timelines could potentially result in students losing a full academic year, thereby disrupting their higher education prospects.

Government Initiatives and Commitments

Senator Tarar stressed the urgent necessity of eliminating barriers faced by Pakistani students who are seeking to pursue higher education in the UK. He informed the British High Commissioner that, under the direct instructions of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, a dedicated committee headed by him has been working tirelessly to refine the legal and institutional framework surrounding students pursuing studies abroad. The minister confirmed that the committee has finalized its recommendations, with ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening mechanisms to proactively address student grievances.

Institutional Cooperation and Future Outlook

In response to these concerns, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott provided assurances that the visa processing delays would be reviewed and addressed appropriately. The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to enhancing institutional cooperation and strengthening the educational partnership between the two nations. Minister of State for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Barrister Aqeel Malik, was also present during the discussions to support the ongoing bilateral engagement efforts, consistent with the country’s wider diplomatic focus, including recent developments such as the Pakistan Embassy in Ankara celebrating the 79th Independence Day with renewed spirit.
