Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Orders NDMA to Expand Flood Relief Efforts

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday issued formal directives to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to deploy all available national resources to provide comprehensive assistance and relief to the populations impacted by widespread flooding across the country. The directive comes as the nation continues to monitor economic stability and infrastructure resilience amidst recurring climate challenges.

During a high-level briefing held at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister met with NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik. According to an official statement issued by the PM Office Media Wing, the Chairman provided a detailed assessment of the prevailing meteorological conditions, with a specific focus on the catastrophic potential of monsoon-related flooding.

Enhanced Coordination and Technological Integration

The Prime Minister underscored the necessity of seamless synergy between federal agencies and local counterparts. He explicitly instructed the NDMA to maintain active and effective coordination with relevant provincial authorities and the various Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to ensure a unified response to the crisis. Furthermore, the Prime Minister commended the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced predictive technology at the National Emergencies Operations Centre, noting that such modern tools are essential for proactive disaster management.

Ongoing Relief and Rehabilitation Operations

The briefing included a comprehensive overview of the ongoing relief operations currently being executed in the most severely impacted regions. Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik apprised the Prime Minister regarding the specific measures undertaken to facilitate the rehabilitation of displaced families and those who have lost livelihoods due to the surge in water levels. The NDMA Chairman reaffirmed that the authority, with robust support from the federal government, remains committed to sustaining critical relief operations in the flood-stricken areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The government’s strategic focus remains on prioritizing public welfare as the country navigates the challenging monsoon season.
