LAHORE (special crosspondent) – Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has claimed that “the powers that be” are no longer willing to bear the burden of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government’s failures, stating they have reached the limits of their endurance after carrying that burden for the past four years. The governor made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Governor’s House in Lahore.

Shifting Political Dynamics in Punjab

He noted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), despite being a coalition partner at the federal level, has decided to adopt a more assertive opposition role, particularly within Punjab, in the lead-up to the next general elections. Haider suggested that the period during which the PML-N enjoyed favored status within the system has concluded. He further alleged that both the federal and Punjab provincial governments have relied heavily on media management to obfuscate their policy failures and allegations of corruption, asserting that the PPP will no longer remain silent on these critical matters. As political tensions rise, observers continue to track PML-N leads in various regions as the electoral landscape evolves.

Addressing Power-Sharing Rumors

The Punjab governor explicitly dismissed speculation regarding a formal written power-sharing agreement between the PML-N and the PPP. Such rumors suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would transfer the premiership to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari after the mid-term mark. Haider clarified that no such document exists. He added that internal factions within the PPP in Punjab have been reconciled, positioning the party to exercise a more robust and effective oversight role against the incumbent administration.

PPP’s Stance on Governance

During the same interaction, PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hasan Murtaza emphasized that the party’s status as a coalition ally does not necessitate acquiescence regarding government policies or alleged corruption. “The PPP is neither dumb, blind nor deaf,” Murtaza stated, affirming the party’s commitment to criticizing government policies in the public interest.
