SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan Oversees Strategic EV Partnership for Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – In a major move aimed at accelerating the nation’s transition toward sustainable energy, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, oversaw the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between StarCharge, StarCharge Energy Pakistan, and Bahum Global Ltd. This development aligns with the federal government’s broader efforts to incentivize industrial modernization and promote clean energy initiatives across the country.

Strengthening the Electric Vehicle Ecosystem

The collaboration is set to bolster Pakistan’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by prioritizing local manufacturing and the transfer of advanced technology from international partners. Addressing the ceremony, SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan underscored the government’s commitment to transforming the national transportation sector. He noted that the upcoming Battery Energy Storage System Policy is intended to act as a catalyst for an EV revolution, fostering an environment that encourages local production and attracts vital foreign direct investment.

Reducing Dependence on Imported Fuel

Mr. Khan emphasized that shifting toward electric mobility is crucial for Pakistan’s economic stability, as it is expected to significantly reduce the nation’s reliance on imported petroleum products. By decreasing the import bill, this shift will support environmental sustainability and enhance national energy security. Furthermore, the government is actively facilitating the rollout of a comprehensive nationwide EV charging infrastructure, which is essential to support the rising number of electric vehicles on the road.

Industrial Growth and Sino-Pak Cooperation

The SAPM highlighted that strategic partnerships with leading global entities, particularly Chinese firms, remain central to strengthening domestic industrial capabilities. These collaborations are expected to boost the local manufacturing of EV batteries while providing significant employment opportunities for Pakistan’s youth. The event served as a testament to the deepening industrial cooperation between Pakistan and China, particularly in the sectors of advanced manufacturing and clean energy. As the government continues its efforts to refine industrial policies, observers are also tracking other major developments, such as the SECP’s recent approval of the first IPO for the 2026-27 period to stimulate capital markets.

A Business-Friendly Vision

Reiterating the administration’s resolve to establish a business-friendly climate, Mr. Khan stated that the vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is to transform Pakistan into a prominent regional manufacturing hub. The focus remains on supporting industries that drive job creation, boost exports, and encourage technological innovation. The signing ceremony was attended by Secretary for Industries and Production Saif Anjum, Joint Secretary Freedoon Akram Sheikh, alongside senior representatives from the involved corporations and various business leaders.
