LAHORE (special crosspondent) – Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Secretary General Amir-ul-Azeem, a prominent religious, political, and organizational leader, has passed away following a prolonged battle with cancer. Despite his deteriorating health, he remained actively engaged in the party’s organizational affairs until his final days, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated political activism. His death has been met with widespread mourning across Pakistan’s political and religious spectrum.

Early Life and Student Activism

Amir-ul-Azeem began his public life during his formative years as a student by joining Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT). He quickly rose through the ranks to become a dynamic student leader, eventually being elected President of the Punjab University Students’ Union. His leadership trajectory continued as he served as the Nazim-e-Ala (Central President) of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba Pakistan. During the pivotal movement for the restoration of student unions under the regime of General Zia-ul-Haq, he played a central role, leading to his imprisonment as a consequence of his political defiance.

Organizational Contributions and Leadership

Following the completion of his education, Amir-ul-Azeem committed his professional life to the service of Jamaat-e-Islami, assuming various critical roles. He served as the party’s Central Secretary for Information, Secretary General and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore, and later as the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Central Punjab. In 2019, his organizational expertise led to his appointment as the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan. In this capacity, he was instrumental in refining the party’s organizational structure, formulating political strategies, and expanding public outreach efforts, much like the systematic development seen in various national reform agendas.

Legacy and Condolences

Known for his personal integrity, simplicity, and disciplined approach to politics, Amir-ul-Azeem commanded respect from both allies and political opponents. He maintained a strong focus on mentorship, dedicating significant effort to the training and development of the younger generation of party workers. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman described his passing as an irreparable loss, noting that Amir-ul-Azeem had devoted his entire life to Islamic causes and the service of the nation. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and leaders from across the political, religious, and social sectors have expressed deep sorrow, paying tribute to his life of service and extending formal condolences to his bereaved family.
