ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, presided over the 8th meeting of the Cabinet Committee tasked with evaluating recommendations from the Drug Pricing Committee and the Policy Board of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). The session aimed to address critical issues surrounding pharmaceutical regulation and public health economics in the country.

Key Attendees and Deliberations

The high-level meeting was attended by Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Mr. Mustafa Kamal, and Federal Minister for Defense Production, Mr. Muhammad Raza Hayat Harraj. During the proceedings, the Committee received an exhaustive briefing from DRAP regarding the fixation of prices for new drugs, management of hardship applications, and general pricing policies designed to ensure the continuous availability of essential medicines across the nation.

While economic policy remains a priority, the government continues to balance fiscal realities, much like the recent adjustments seen in the broader energy sector, such as when the Pakistan Government Increases Petrol and High Speed Diesel Prices Again, which impact the operational costs of the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Strategic Directives for Pricing Reform

Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb stressed that all future determinations regarding drug pricing must remain transparent, evidence-based, and rooted in a deeply consultative approach. He emphasized that the primary motivation behind these regulatory decisions must be the broader public interest. The Finance Minister noted the necessity of striking a delicate balance: ensuring that patients maintain access to vital life-saving treatments while simultaneously preserving the financial sustainability of the pharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore, Senator Aurangzeb called for improved public engagement strategies to clearly articulate the rationale behind policy decisions affecting critical medicines. This effort aligns with the government’s broader commitment to stability, similar to how the Army Chief General Asim Munir Reaffirms Commitment To Balochistan Stability in separate national security forums.

The meeting concluded with directives to streamline the review process for pricing applications to prevent shortages of essential drugs. Beyond the Cabinet members, the session included senior government officials, notably the Secretary of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Mr. Muhammad Aslam Ghauri; the Chief Executive Officer of DRAP; and senior representatives from both the Commerce and Finance Divisions.
