BYD Secures Major Battery Storage Contract for Abu Dhabi Solar Project

ABU DHABI (special crosspondent) – Chinese clean energy and electric vehicle giant BYD has officially secured a landmark contract to supply 11.275 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage for the world’s largest integrated solar-plus-storage project, currently under development in Abu Dhabi.

The ambitious project, which is being spearheaded through a partnership between Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), aims to integrate a 5.2-gigawatt solar power plant with an expansive total battery storage capacity of 19 GWh. This initiative is designed to ensure the continuous, round-the-clock delivery of clean electricity on a massive, gigawatt-scale, representing a critical leap forward in the global energy transition. Similar efforts toward technological modernization include initiatives like the Nippon HEV Launches Advanced Hydrogen Mobility and Battery Solutions in Pakistan project, which mirrors the growing international demand for sustainable storage.

Technical Specifications and Strategic Partnerships

Under the terms of the newly signed agreement, BYD is tasked with providing a 1,644-megawatt/11.275-GWh battery station. The system will leverage the company’s proprietary MC Cube-T ESS and high-performance Blade Battery technologies. It has been confirmed that the remaining 7.5 GWh of the project’s storage capacity has been awarded to Sungrow, another leading Chinese entity, effectively consolidating the battery component of this flagship project within the expertise of Chinese suppliers.

Adapting to Extreme Gulf Climate Conditions

BYD has stated that its energy storage architecture is engineered to maintain peak operational efficiency in extreme temperatures, ranging from as low as minus 30 to as high as 55 degrees Celsius. This resilience makes the technology particularly compatible with the challenging climate of the Gulf region.
