Finance Minister Aurangzeb Discusses Pakistan Economic Reforms With URAAN Scholars

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, convened an interactive session on Monday with participants of the URAAN Overseas Pakistanis Summer Scholars Programme, a six-week internship initiative facilitated by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.

The programme serves as a bridge for overseas Pakistani students and young scholars from prestigious international universities to engage directly with public institutions. According to an official release, the initiative aims to harness the research, education, and global exposure of these students to contribute to the nation’s development and long-term prosperity.

During his address at the Finance Division, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb lauded the program for fostering deeper ties with the country’s youth living abroad. He urged the scholars to maintain their connection to Pakistan and utilize their expertise and innovative mindsets to support the government’s economic agenda. Similar efforts to support local enterprise are ongoing, as noted in recent policy discussions regarding Jam Kamal Reaffirms Government Commitment to Empowering Pakistan’s SME Sector.

Overview of Economic Reforms and Macroeconomic Stability

The Finance Minister provided a comprehensive briefing on Pakistan’s current economic outlook, emphasizing the progress achieved in macroeconomic stabilization over the past two and a half years. He stated that the government’s current priority is to pivot toward sustainable growth, fueled by enhanced exports, increased investment, strict fiscal discipline, and consistent structural reforms. He reiterated that a robust, private sector-led economy remains the bedrock of the government’s long-term strategy.

Addressing the international perception of the economy, the Minister highlighted recent improvements in Pakistan’s sovereign credit profile. He pointed to the country’s successful return to global capital markets, including the inaugural issuance of Panda Bonds, as evidence of strengthening investor confidence. These efforts to stabilize and diversify national funding align with broader initiatives, even as other sectors navigate complex financial challenges like those seen in Pakistan Hydropower Projects Face Soaring Costs Amid Inflation and Delays.

Digital Transformation and Regulatory Frameworks

Focusing on the digital frontier, the Finance Minister detailed the government’s intent to position Pakistan within the global digital economy. He highlighted the establishment of the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA), which is designed to provide a modern, robust regulatory framework for digital assets. The Minister noted that this initiative is intended to promote responsible innovation while ensuring necessary regulatory oversight to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the digital finance sector.

The Minister also outlined a series of measures aimed at improving the ease of doing business. These include the rationalization of the tax structure, the promotion of affordable financing, and competitive energy pricing, all of which are essential for enhancing export competitiveness. The discussion stressed that export diversification and increased productivity are vital for the country’s economic transition.

Interactive Engagement with Future Professionals

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer period, where scholars engaged the Minister on various topics, including the trajectory of economic reforms, strategies for export promotion, the complexities of climate finance, and potential investment avenues in Pakistan. Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing a platform for young, talented professionals to participate in the country’s transformation, ultimately ensuring that their international experience translates into meaningful national growth.
