GENEVA (special crosspondent) – Pakistan-born economist and global policy expert Saadia Zahidi has been appointed as the new Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), becoming the first woman in the organization’s history to lead the global airline industry body.

Appointment and Transition Details

According to an announcement by IATA, Lahore-born Saadia Zahidi will assume office on November 1, 2026, succeeding Willie Walsh, who will step down on July 31. Until Zahidi takes charge, IATA Chief Financial Officer Sandrine Le Borgne will serve as Acting Director General.

Background and Academic Profile

Saadia Zahidi is currently serving as Managing Director at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and has spent years working on global economic development, labour markets, gender equality and competitiveness. She is also the author of the book “Fifty Million Rising”, which explores the growing role of working women across the Muslim world. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Smith College, an MPhil in International Economics from The Graduate Institute, Geneva, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

Strategic Leadership for Aviation

Welcoming the appointment, the IATA Board said Zahidi’s extensive international experience and leadership at the World Economic Forum would strengthen the association’s role as the global voice of the airline industry. Future Challenges and Industry Outlook

In her acceptance statement, Zahidi said she looked forward to working closely with member airlines, governments and industry partners to build on IATA’s strong foundation, promote innovation, enhance resilience and support sustainable growth in global aviation.

She will assume leadership at a time when the aviation industry is facing multiple challenges, including geopolitical tensions, rising fuel prices, supply chain disruptions, shortages of new aircraft and sustainable aviation fuel, as well as the industry’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
