ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui received Congressman Michael James Baumgartner, U.S. Representative for Washington’s 5th Congressional District, and Congressman Ryan Keith Zinke, U.S. Representative for Montana’s 1st Congressional District and former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, for a bilateral meeting to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration. As noted in recent high-level diplomatic engagements, both nations remain committed to fostering stable and productive bilateral relations.

Expanding Cooperation in Cybersecurity and Technology

The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training, Ms. Wajiha Qamar, the Chairman of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), Mr. Qamar-ul-Islam Raja, and other senior officials. The discussion primarily focused on capacity building in cybersecurity, with Dr. Siddiqui emphasizing the need for specialized certification programs to address evolving digital security threats. Both sides explored partnerships between Pakistani and U.S. universities to facilitate curriculum development, faculty collaboration, and joint research in emerging technologies.

Strengthening People-to-People Ties and Academic Exchange

Minister Siddiqui reaffirmed that the bilateral relationship with the United States is a vital pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy. He specifically lauded the success of the Fulbright Program, administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), which has provided merit-based opportunities for thousands of scholars. To date, over 44,000 Pakistanis have benefited from U.S. government exchange programs, serving as a significant investment in human capital. The Ministry expressed a keen interest in expanding these ties through dual-degree programs, joint research centers, and initiatives focused on climate resilience, public health, and water management.

Commitment to Innovation and Future Growth

Addressing the global demand for STEM expertise, Dr. Siddiqui highlighted Pakistan’s potential as a reliable partner in the information technology and fintech sectors. The discussion explored the establishment of virtual laboratories and innovation incubators to bolster entrepreneurship. Both delegations concluded that sustained high-level engagement—including the resumption of Congressional Delegation (CODEL) visits—is essential to maintaining the positive trajectory of the Pakistan-U.S. partnership, ultimately fostering long-term cooperation in trade, agriculture, and energy sectors alongside education.
