Trump Welcomes Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye Defence Pact
Washington: US President Donald Trump has welcomed the mutual defence agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, describing it as an important step toward stronger regional security cooperation in the Middle East.
In a post on social media on Sunday, Trump said he was “very happy” that Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan had finally signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. He described the pact as a “big, bold and important first step.”
Trump said the agreement demonstrated that countries in the Middle East were coming together and would be able to strengthen their ability to defend themselves more effectively.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed the agreement in Mecca last week. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three, establishing a collective-defence principle similar to the concept underpinning NATO.
The agreement is aimed at strengthening political and military coordination among the three countries and expanding defence cooperation. Turkish officials have indicated that future cooperation could cover land, naval and air defence, as well as cybersecurity, drone technology, electronic warfare, artificial intelligence and other defence technologies.
Trump’s endorsement comes at a time of heightened security tensions across the Middle East, with several countries seeking to strengthen their defence capabilities and establish closer regional security arrangements.
Analysts say the agreement could mark an important step toward the development of a new regional security framework. However, its practical significance will depend on how the collective-defence principle is implemented and how closely the three countries coordinate their military capabilities.
Trump’s positive response also suggests that Washington currently views the initiative as an effort by regional countries to take greater responsibility for their own security rather than as an immediate threat to US interests.
