ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Pakistan and the United States have explored avenues to bolster bilateral cooperation within the maritime sector, with a specific emphasis on investment, trade, port development, and the burgeoning blue economy. The discussions occurred during a meeting on Wednesday at the minister’s office between the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and the United States Chargé d’Affaires, Natalie A. Baker.
Minister Highlights Strategic Importance of Pakistan’s Maritime Assets
Minister Junaid Chaudhry underscored the strategic significance of Pakistan’s extensive coastline and its vital port infrastructure. He extended a formal invitation to United States investors, encouraging them to explore the considerable opportunities available in key maritime areas, including infrastructure development, shipping operations, logistics management, and ancillary port-related services. The minister emphasised Pakistan’s proactive efforts to cultivate a business-friendly environment conducive to foreign investment, expressing a strong desire for increased American participation in the development of the nation’s blue economy. Discussions also encompassed the critical aspects of strengthening port infrastructure, optimising logistics networks, and enhancing connectivity to facilitate robust regional and international trade flows.
Joint Working Group to Foster Maritime Engagement
Both sides engaged in a comprehensive exchange of views aimed at stimulating maritime commerce and capitalising on investment potential linked to Pakistan’s expanding blue economy. An agreement in principle was reached to establish a joint working group, which will serve as a platform to promote coordination and deepen bilateral engagement across the maritime sector. This initiative is expected to pave the way for more structured and productive collaboration.
US Reaffirms Interest in Economic Partnership
Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker reiterated Washington’s keen interest in deepening economic cooperation with Pakistan. She specifically highlighted the potential for strengthening partnerships in maritime development, acknowledging the significant prospects for collaboration in the realm of the blue economy and sustainable development initiatives. Baker also recognised Pakistan’s constructive role in fostering regional peace and stability. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment from both parties to enhance their existing partnerships in maritime affairs, trade, and investment. The objective is to identify novel cooperation opportunities and collectively support sustainable economic growth for the mutual benefit of both nations.
