RAWALPINDI, September 3: Former Punjab Minister for Health and Population Welfare and social figure Dr Jamal Nasir has called for making public the facts surrounding the deaths of innocent children at PIMS Hospital and fixing responsibility for the tragedy.

Addressing a Defence Day ceremony at Qazi Farm House, he said the public and bereaved families had the right to know the actual causes of the incident. He stressed that the era of concealing facts was over and urged the authorities to ensure transparency, truthfulness and merit-based appointments in hospitals and educational institutions.

Dr Jamal Nasir said the PIMS tragedy was a serious question for the authorities and asked who was responsible for the deaths of the innocent children. He said elimination of corruption, promotion of merit and honest leadership were essential for strengthening Pakistan.

He also stressed the need to prepare the younger generation to contribute to the defence, development and progress of the country.

Other speakers said Defence Day reminded the nation of the sacrifices of the martyrs and the bravery of the armed forces. They said national unity was essential for the country’s security and stability and called for promoting patriotism, positive thinking and a spirit of service among the youth.

Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Focal Person Abdul Moeez Khan said Pakistan had a bright future and the government was providing opportunities for the youth to move forward.

Muhammad Aslam Khan stressed that elimination of corruption was essential for national stability, while National Labour Federation President Shams-ur-Rehman Swati said the nation remained united with the armed forces for the defence of the country.

Pakistan Muslim League (Junejo) President Iqbal Dar reaffirmed the resolve to maintain national unity and safeguard the honour and sanctity of the homeland.

Dr Shehzad Iqbal Sham, Hafiz Naseem Mahmood Khalil, Professor Firdous, Tariq Shaheen, Azhar Hafeez, senior journalist Shakeel Yamin Kanga and others also addressed the ceremony.
