Pakistan Welcomes Arbitration Court Ruling Upholding Indus Waters Treaty

ISLAMABAD, August 31: Pakistan has welcomed the unanimous decision of the Court of Arbitration, which rejected India’s unilateral attempt to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and reaffirmed that the treaty remains fully operative and binding on both parties.

According to a statement by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, the decision supports Pakistan’s longstanding position that a binding international treaty cannot be unilaterally suspended or terminated.

Ishaq Dar said India was obligated to fully comply with all its responsibilities under the Indus Waters Treaty, as well as the binding decisions issued through the dispute-resolution mechanisms established under the treaty.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan would remain firmly committed to protecting its rights under the Indus Waters Treaty and would continue to pursue the matter in accordance with international law.
