US Temporarily Pauses Immigrant Visa Processing as Trump Administration Tightens Immigration Crackdown

WASHINGTON: The administration of US President Donald Trump has temporarily halted the processing of immigrant visa applications, in what is being described as another major step toward tightening the country’s immigration policies.

According to The Guardian, the US State Department decided earlier this month to pause processing of immigrant visa cases to provide consular officers with comprehensive training on the enhanced screening of applicants. The review will also examine whether applicants are likely to rely on US government benefits in the future.

The decision has resulted in the cancellation of some previously scheduled visa interviews, while applicants will be informed later about new interview dates and further procedures. US officials say the training is intended to ensure greater consistency in the way visa applications are assessed at embassies and consulates around the world.

The Trump administration has already introduced several tougher immigration measures, including increased scrutiny of visa applicants’ social media activity, higher visa fees and the cancellation of certain categories of visas.

Reports also indicate that the US government is preparing to revoke the business and tourist visas of around 200,000 foreign nationals who have applied for asylum in the United States or are seeking asylum. US officials argue that some individuals enter the country on temporary visas and subsequently use the immigration system to seek permanent residence.

The latest development comes as the Trump administration continues to impose stricter monitoring and additional screening requirements across various legal immigration pathways.

Human rights organizations and immigration advocacy groups have criticized the measures, warning that they could restrict legal immigration channels and potentially result in discriminatory treatment of some applicants.

The administration, however, maintains that enhanced screening is necessary to protect national security, strengthen the immigration system and safeguard the interests of the American public.

The US State Department has already imposed restrictions on the issuance of immigrant visas to nationals of certain countries, including Pakistan. Under the current policy, applicants from affected countries may still submit applications and attend interviews, but visa issuance may remain suspended in certain cases.
